Stepping Out For A Cure 2011

Martha Leta, Maureen Sullivan, Medtronic's Lenny the Lion, Steve Lichtman and Vance Varian

News From The Front Lines by Martha Hicks Leta

All in all, Saturday October 22 was a great day for a walk, especially when it meant raising money and awareness to put an end to diabetes. While the showing from Fitness Together wasn’t as strong as last year, (we’ll hang that on the timing of our PACK Training rollouts) it was still pretty darn respectable.

Steve Lichtman, team captain for Cohasset, led our rag tag band of warriors, arriving at the crack of dawn to trick out the Fitness Together tent with banners, brochures, clipboards and flags. The team filled out nicely as the morning warmed with Maureen Sullivan from North Andover; Cathy Schaum, Marianne Cristello, Linda Morancy, Jean McQuestion, Irene Rossi, Michelle Rossi and trainer Vance Varian from Tyngsboro/Nashua. The Leta Family (Yours Truly with husband Lou, and daughters Bonnie and Caroline) carried the banner for Team Norwell; Representin’ for Notorious Team Westford was the ever-intrepid Ken Ballou and trainer Kati Salowski. Closing the age gap was baby Kaden Cardoza from Dedham, who had to be pushed in his stroller by parents Lisa and Michael Cardoza because, at two months old, apparently he’s “too little” to walk yet. (Whatever. We want to see him doing mountain climbers by Christmas, Michael.)

The Fitness Together tent, set in a primo location next to the registration area, attracted a fascinating variety of people who stopped by throughout the day to learn about our programs and to share their personal stories.

Maureen Sullivan chatted with a young woman who, while signing up her father to win some PACK training sessions, told Maureen about the difficulties of getting her rambunctious young cousin to sit still for his daily insulin injections. Maureen says, “The woman told me that the young boy turned to his older brother one day and said, ‘When I grow up, there will be a cure for my disease and I’ll be normal just like you.’ Here we are years later,” says Maureen, “Closer to a cure, but still with a high number of people suffering from the disease. That is why she walks every year.”

After the walk we were joined for lunch by Barbara, a woman with type 2 diabetes who’d been crippled by polio during her childhood in Italy in the 1960s. She said that in the early 1990’s several of her family members developed diabetes in quick succession. She wants to find a cure. Despite her dependence on a wheelchair, she came to volunteer for the walk and refused my offer to carry her trash to the waste barrel. “No, thanks. I’m perfectly capable of doing it myself.” And off she went.

We also met Noah, a young lad who went from table to table handing out temporary tattoos and Silly Bands shaped like blue flamingos. He calls himself “The Diabetes Dude” and says, “I have diabetes, but diabetes doesn’t have me.” At the age of 10, the Diabetes Dude has made it his personal business to travel the country telling his story. “I spend my time raising awareness of diabetes wherever I go, every chance I get and will continue to do so until there is a cure.”

Clearly, this cause matters a lot to a lot of people and the money raised is a big part of it. MC’d by Mix 104 morning drive disc jockey Karson, the opening ceremony featured team leaders and corporate sponsor presentations. FT’s own Steve Lichtman presented a check to the ADA for $20,000, an amount that roughly represents the collective contributions, thus far, from all Fitness Together Studios participating in the 2011 ADA co-operative program.

Patriot's defensive lineman Vince Wilfork | Darrell Lavoie Photography darrell.lavoie@yahoo.com

Patriot’s defensive lineman Vince Wilfork, who is raising money for his own diabetes foundation, said a few words about his late father, who was stricken by diabetes before he ever got the chance to see his son turn pro. “I had to give him shots at times, he was so weak,” said Wilfork. “I had to bathe him, had to take him to the restroom. There was a lot going on that my brother and I had to deal with. That’s why this is really close and dear to my heart.”

Though the big man was a hard act to follow, Tyngsboro/Nashua’s own big man, trainer Vance Varian, got the crowd fired up with a warm-up to Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger.” Said Vance’s boss, Cathy Schaum, “I was very proud of my young trainer leading the warm-ups. I thought he was very poised and enthusiastic in leading the crowd and represented the entire FT organization very well.”

Along with Fitness Together’s sizable group donation to the ADA, the organization can be especially proud of Fitness Together Westford, which came in third place for individual corporate fundraising at $5,115, trailing Walgreen’s Boston North and Waters Corporation. Westford owner Greg Briggle is also listed among the top 20 individual fundraisers. Greg’s talent and enthusiasm for fundraising for this cause is inspirational.

The number of walkers estimated at the event came in around 3,000. To date the ADA is at 59% of their total goal of $500,000.

You can still donate for the cause through our page at FTMass

FT Battles Diabetes In Many Ways

Fitness Together Raises More Than $50,000 for Battle Against Diabetes

Company also provides trainers to help people with diabetes.

By Bryan McGonigle for North Andover Patch April 7, 2011

Fitness Together has raised more than $50,000 for the American Diabetes Association of Eastern New England.

“A lot of people can raise money, support a good cause, and call it a day,” Maureen Sullivan, owner of Fitness Together in North Andover, said. “But that’s not what Fitness Together had in mind when we signed up to support the ADA chapter.”

Fitness Together is a network of 43 Fitness Together franchised studios throughout Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire. The franchises banded together and sponsored the ADA’s “STEP OUT: Walk to Fight Diabetes” campaign to raise the funds and surpass their goal of $50,000.

“We also wanted to invite people living with type 2 diabetes into our studio to offer personal, tailored and safe exercise and nutrition guidance that could improve their lives for the better.”

So the group has enlisted 35 people with type-2 diabetes across eastern New England for their type 2 diabetes observational studies. Fitness Together is tracking the impact of a fitness and nutrition program on their clients’ type-2 diabetes over six months.

The company announced that the program has been so successful that the enrollment period to add more study participants has been extended to the end of the year.

“We have seen dramatic transformations both physically and emotionally,” Maureen said. “This isn’t just about losing weight. It’s about battling an illness in a smart, responsible and healthy manner.”

For more information about the Fitness Together’s type-2 diabetes study, contact Adam Genetti at Fitness Together North Andover, 73 Main St., at 978-659-0047. You can also visit their Web site or email maureensullivan@fitnesstogether.com.

Our Donations Exceed $50,000 To American Diabetes Association of Eastern New England

Personal trainers help clients with diabetes improve their health and wellness.

We here at the Fitness Together Massachusetts Owners Group, specializing in one-on-one personal training, are proud to announce we have raised more than $50,000 for the American Diabetes Association of Eastern New England.

Our network of 43 Fitness Together franchised studios throughout Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire collectively signed on as the Official Health and Fitness Sponsor for the ADA’s STEP OUT: Walk to Fight Diabetes campaign to raise the funds and make the contribution.

Meanwhile, the additional sweat they have put into helping people living with type 2 diabetes across their fitness studios has magnified their cause and given a face…several faces… to the illness.

Separate from the crowds at STEP OUT walks in Worcester, Mass.; Providence, R.I.; and Boston recently, Fitness Together certified personal trainers have spent the past days, weeks and months up close and personal with people battling the illness, who are on a quest for health and wellness.

“A lot of people can raise money, support a good cause, and call it a day. But that’s not what Fitness Together had in mind when we signed up to support the ADA chapter,” said Steve Lichtman, owner of 4 Fitness Together franchises. “We also wanted to invite people living with type 2 diabetes into our studios to offer personal, tailored and safe exercise and nutrition guidance that could improve their lives for the better.”

In conjunction with the fundraising effort that surpassed Fitness Together’s goal to raise $40,000 for the ADA, the group has enlisted 35 people with type 2 diabetes across Eastern New England for their type 2 diabetes observational study. Fitness Together is tracking the impact of a fitness and nutrition program on their client’s type 2 diabetes over a six month period. The results have been amazing and Fitness Together has extended their enrollment period to add more study participants now through year-end.

“We have seen dramatic transformations both physically and emotionally,” Steve said. “This isn’t just about losing weight. It’s about battling an illness in a smart, responsible and healthy manner.”

And the battle continues. Based on the success of this study, Fitness Together wants to broaden the awareness of it services.

People with type 2 diabetes are encouraged to contact their local Fitness Together studio and visit FTGetsResults.com to get more information. “The positive impact of helping people lose weight, get in shape, lower their dependence on medications and live a more fulfilling life is the best motivator,” said Chris Boynton, Executive Director for the ADA, Eastern New England.

Steffi Mowad: An FT Inspiration

Steffi Mowad & Steve Lichtman

Steffi has Type 1 Diabetes. Her story is a tremendous inspiration to us here at Fitness Together and was one of the reason’s we worked hard to reach our fundraising goal for ADA New England. Steffi walked with us at the Step Out For A Cure walk a few weeks ago.

Hi Steve and Maria,

I am so excited that your company formed a team and is walking in this year’s Boston Step Out to Fight Diabetes! As you know from my story diabetes is a part of my everyday life.

I can’t wait to meet you at the walk and get a chance to personally thank all of you. Your team is an inspiration to me!

I have been gearing up for fall soccer by doing conditioning classes and I have been going to the beach with my sister and mom on the weekends! I also secretly like being able to sleep in every once in a while.

Thanks again,

Stephanie Mowad

Fitness Together Type 2 Diabetes Program Shows Positive Results

We’re conducting a 6 month type 2 diabetes fitness study in each of our four studios. Some participants recently completed their fitness re-tests with very positive results. One doctor told his patient, “I haven’t seen you lose 12 pounds in 12 years, let alone 6 weeks – what are you doing that’s working so well?” Another doctor called to tell the patient that his blood glucose dropped into a safe level for the very first time and he wants to learn more about our program.

If you know someone who needs help getting fit, do them a big favor and refer them to us. Our nationally certified personal trainers understand the emotional and physical challenges which inhibit people from sticking with a program and getting positive results. We know how to motivate people and make exercise fun. It’s not all about dieting. It’s about helping people feel better, look better, get healthy and learn how to make lasting lifestyle changes.

In Good Health,

Doodlez Raising Money For Diabetes

Abi with Doodlez

Abigail McGlone has had Type 1 Diabetes for over 10 years. A few years back she came up with the idea of making her own educational film about diabetes to help other kids. Abi also created a little character named Doodlez who is the film’s mascot, cheering us on as we take the steps needed to make this film project a reality. Abi and her mom will be selling Doodlez plush toys at Medfield Day on September 25th. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of Doodlez will go to the Fitness Together Cardio For A Cure fundraising campaign for the American Diabetes Association.

The Diagnosis – Type 1 Diabetes

It was September 5th, 1999. What would normally be a carefree Labor Day weekend was not turning out that way. Abigail, our cheerful and energetic almost 3 year-old daughter was not herself. She was exceptionally thirsty, soaking through multiple layers of diapers overnight and acting very lethargic. Surprisingly, a doctor missed these classic symptoms during our office visit just three days earlier. Then on September 6th, Labor Day Monday, things still didn’t seem right so we went back to a different doctor. This time, much to our shock and despair, we were told to go immediately to Children’s Hospital Boston since Abigail almost certainly had Juvenile Diabetes.

Dealing with the Disease – The Grade School Years

It’s been over 10 years since that devastating weekend. Abigail, who now goes by Abi, is a 13 year-old young lady who wears an insulin pump 24/7 and checks her blood sugar 5-7 times per day. An active teenager with lots of friends, Abi has learned to live with her diabetes quite well, without too many struggles. However, throughout her school years she has often been frustrated with people not truly understanding her disease. Abi felt that the educational films about diabetes shown at school throughout the years were either outdated or didn’t give an accurate story of what it’s like to live with this disease. This is when Abi came up with the idea to make our own educational film to help kids understand what it’s really like to live with Type 1 diabetes.

Doing Something to Help – The Film & Doodlez!

Abi’s idea to create a film sounded like a good idea to her family. After much consideration, lots of time and work, a script was conceived and written for a ten minute film which we titled, “The Balancing Act: A Day in the Life of a Kid with Type 1 Diabetes”. We chose this name since diabetes itself is a daily balancing act, constantly balancing insulin, food and exercise in order to keep blood sugar levels in a safe and healthy range. Around this same time, Abi created a character that she was always doodling on her schoolwork, and she called this character Doodlez. It was such an adorable little character that we decided to have Doodlez introduce the film. We also had Doodlez made into a 4” plush toy that kids can clip onto their backpacks. Our goal is to get Doodlez in the hands of newly diagnosed kids, along with the educational DVD. At this point we have an inventory of 500 Doodlez plush toys ready to go and waiting for the film to be made!

Moving Forward – Get that Film Made!

Our goal is to get the film produced as soon as possible and to make it available to schools, hospitals and libraries throughout the United States. We believe this will help kids and teachers gain a better understanding of what life is like on a daily basis for kids with Type 1 diabetes. By doing this, Abi hopes that kids like her will be able to avoid the anxiety and frustration she felt during her grade school years. Our wish is to find a corporate partner, ideally a blood glucose meter manufacturer who would sponsor the film. Once completed, we would package the film, the glucose meter and the Doodlez plush-toy and have it ready for distribution throughout the United States. Abi is also the voice of the animated Doodlez, who appears in our website and in our 10 minute film. The picture on the left shows Abi recording the voice of Doodlez in a recording studio in New York City.

Type 2 Study by FT Studios In MA & RI

Impact Of Diet & Exercise Impact On Diabetes Will Be Researched

50 Participants Needed For Study

Some of the newest clients exercising at area Fitness Together franchised studios in Massachusetts and Rhode Island are doing more than stepping on a scale to chart their progress. They’re giving blood.

They are part of a type 2 diabetes observational study being conducted by area Fitness Together studios to examine the impact of a 26-week individualized fitness training program. Regular blood glucose tests with a small prick on the finger are as important as the exercise in measuring safe success.

“Diabetes is a major health issue affecting more than 24 million Americans, and our franchisees have told us they are happy to have a chance to make a difference,” says Jeff Jervik, president and CEO of Fitness Together Holdings, Inc.

Fitness Together studios are welcoming a minimum of 50 subjects to the program and will share the results with the American Diabetes Association (ADA) of Eastern New England where the Fitness Together franchise group is also the Official Health and Fitness Sponsor for the ADA’s Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes.

In one of the largest research projects of its kind, 42 Fitness Together studios have assembled across Massachusetts and Rhode Island to enlist men and women over the age of 30 who have been clinically diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and are more than 30 pounds overweight. They will be monitored a Certified Diabetes Educator as well as Fitness Together studio personal trainers.

“Through this study, we will better understand the impact of diet and exercise on diabetes control, high blood pressure, one’s sense of well-being and the costs of medications,” explains Joan Hill, Registered Dietitian, Certified Diabetes Educator and Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist (RD, CDE, LDN).

“The mission of the ADA is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. We are supportive of the Fitness Together franchise group’s efforts to gather information for a better understanding on how working with a personal trainer can motivate those with diabetes to improve their control,” said Chris Boynton, executive director for the Eastern New England area of the American Diabetes Association.

From July through December, the Fitness Together studios will chart weight loss and conduct A1c tests, which measure one’s average blood glucose level and helps track if people are at risk of complications due to uncontrolled diabetes. The studios will also track blood pressure, medication use and sense of well-being before and after test results and look for indicators of significant health improvements from the clients. People with type 2 diabetes who wish to be part of the study can locate participating studios at our Cardio For A Cure page on the BostonChannel.com or through our blog page on Step Up For A Cure Studio List

Each client who signs up for the type 2 diabetes study must be cleared by a doctor to exercise and must agree to six-months of observation for the following:

  • resistance training three times a week with a personal trainer in the studio
  • cardiovascular exercise a minimum of three times a week in the studio
  • an initial fitness evaluation followed by fitness re-tests every six weeks
  • documenting of all meals in a nutrition journal
  • frequent blood glucose checks at Fitness Together

In the help to fight diabetes, the Fitness Together studio franchise owners have also pledged to raise a minimum of $40,000 for the ADA Eastern New England Chapter. To join the cause, you can make a donation at participating studios or visit our Cardio for a Cure link in cooperation with the ADA.
